Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 costs too much? Too much more-of-the-same for you? Or maybe you did pre-order it but got some leftover change burning a hole in your pocket (not likely with a 60$ price tag, but who knows, maybe you’re a pimp)? Three great, recent action games are being sold this week at 40-50 percent discounts. Hell, you can almost buy all three for what Activision charges for MW2. They are:

  • Red Faction: Guerrilla - Volition’s 3rd person action game set on Mars and boasting the most complete, realistic destructible environment in a game ever. For 20$ (opposed to the normal 40$) you can join the fighters of the Red Faction and topple bridges and entire buildings in your fight against oppression. Got itself a nice 84 average review score across the internets.
  • Arma II - The excellent, if still somewhat buggy after 2 patches, infantry combat simulator from Prague-based Bohemia Interactive. A war is raging on a Russian island, and the player is free to lead his small elite combat team over all 225 square km of the battlefield, taking on support missions and planning his own path through the chaos. Average score 77, and this weekend sold for only 20$ instead of 40$.
  • Section 8 – Timegate Studio’s partime innovative multiplayer shooter, where players play the part of futuristic troopers, going into battle by hurtling themselves straight from their space transport using entry capsules. In a similar manner players can request heavy weapons and vehicles to drop in on their position from orbit. Not a lot of single player content, this one is for multiplayer addicts only. Got a 76 average score, this weekend on Gamestop for 30$ instead of the usual 50$.

Veteran British free content game site Freeloader has relaunched recently, sporting both a new design and new content.

The “Free PC Games” section is not very interesting – just a collection of the usual flash games you’ll find in a thousand places across the web. The worthwhile content, or promisingly worthwhile, is under the “Free Game Downloads” tab, where the site will offer a new commercial game for download each week.

To enjoy this weekly offer you have to (freely) subscribe to the site with a working email address. After downloading the week’s game, a personal activation code will be delivered to your inbox.

This week, the game on offer is first person shooter Frontlines: Berlin 1945.

Indie award-winner World of Goo is celebrating one year on the market, and players can celebrate too with a special pick-your-own-price deal. Up to October 19th you can purchase the game through developer 2dboy’s site for the price of… you name it! It can be a quarter dollar, five dollars or, if you’ve won the lottery and feel the urge to support a creative and talented developer, a million or two.

The game is usually sold nowadays through various digital stores at a price point of around 10$-15$.

In World of Goo you control a multitude of little blobs, telling them where to go and attach themselves in order to construct bridges, towers and any other sort of building that will get them to the level exit. If you want to experience the concept at the basis of the game, try recent Flash clone Huje Tower. But remember, World of Goo is so much more polished and witty.

Legend of the Golden Mask is a new commercial quality hidden-object adventure game on Candystand. Most importantly, it’s free.

Play the part of the granddaughter of some famous explorer-type adventurer, and follow the clues your granddad left behind in order to trace a legendary treasure in the form of an ancient South-American mask.

You can play the game in relaxed mode, but for the more competitive there is the timed mode, where your time for solving each room will be limited, but as compensation you’ll be rewarded points for time remaining and the ability to brag on the game’s leader-board.

23. Sprout – A plant’s odyssey. Guide a little sprout home by learning the ways of other plants.
24. Asteroids’ Revenge 3 – For countless games they have been blown apart and mined to extinction. Tremble Humans, for now it is the time of the Asteroidsssss!

29. Pillage the Village - Democracy! Pah! What a soft, irrational view of the world. For real progress you need discipline, and for discipline you need an iron hand, or, in the case of this game, an iron mouse cursor.
30. 3D Logic 2 – Beautiful puzzling. Connect sources with paths of color around the faces of a Rubik’s Cube.

Classical strategy-puzzle game Commandos is now available on the Good Old Games store, along with its expansion Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty, both for only 6$.

Commandos is the late nineties progenitor of a sub-genre that focuses on leading a small number of team members, each with his, her or its unique abilities, to penetrate levels filled with enemies using a combination of stealth, sabotage and careful, exact application of violence. Notable examples of this genre include Desperados, Star Trek: Away Team and, of course, Commandos 2.

In Commandos the player has to lead a team of specialists, including the Green Beret, the Spy, the Driver and the Sapper, to complete missions of assassination, intellignece gathering, rescue and sabotage in Germany occupied Europe. Learning the enemy movements, pre-planning and timely plan application are the laws.

Finwick is a bright new online story-driven platform game. Set in an alternate reality built of modern as well as sci-fi and fantasy elements, Finwick tells the story of titular hero, as he joins the royal mail service in order to earn a little pocket money before going back to school. As is wont to happen, things start getting out of control pretty quickly, when his first assignment sends him into the heart of Farwood, where the rumor says monsters have been sighted.

A generous portion of the game – the first 25 levels – can be played for free, allowing you to save your progress. To play beyond the 25th level you’d have to pay 6$.

Last week of Direct2Drive’s anniversary deal, and ten more titles are on sale for only 5$ each. Under the theme of “wargames”, the ten are:

  • The excellent WW2 strategy game, Company of Heroes, in its gold version, including the Opposing Fronts expansion.
  • Futuristic, well-received RTS Supreme Commander, also including expansion.
  • If you’re done with WW2, World in Conflict is another award winning strategy game that pits the might of NATO and America against the Soviet war machine in the late eighties, on American soil no less. Also includes expansion.
  • Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War Dark Crusade is a standalone chapter in the famed Warhammer 40K strategy series, pitting seven playable races against each other in a merciless war of conquest.
  • Battlestation Pacific - A strategy/simulation hybrid in WW2 pacific waters, with a respectable 74 average score
  • Codename Panzers: Cold War - Third game in the Codename Panzers series describes a hypothetical conflict between the US and Soviet Russia, with the split-up Berlin at its center.
  • Hearts of Iron 2 Collection - A heavily detailed grand strategy scale wargame of WW2. Includes two expansions.
  • The somewhat aging but still worthwhile Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, documenting the battles of the American airborne troops at Normandy in a tactical-action format. Seems not to be working on Vista.
  • Delta Force: Land Warrior and Delta Force: Task Force Dagger - The weakest of the bunch, half-hearted remakes of old Novalogic military shooters. Not up to par with modern expectations.
